What it is
Book PALS
In 1992, Mary started the New York chapter of the Screen Actors Guild Foundation program Book PALS
(Performing Artists for Literacy in Schools), frequently reading to school classes herself. She also started
a reading club in six New York schools.
Mission
BookPALS (Performing Artists for Literacy in Schools), is a nationwide volunteer literacy program of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation. Enthusiastic actors, theater students, educators and community members volunteer their time to visit classrooms on a weekly basis to read aloud to kids.
Vision
Mary’s husband Wolfgang Neumann designed the Book PALS t-shirt that students won for reading a set number of books.
